A silly cat called Hobo.

by Jemima.

I don't know who came up with the name Hobo but I think it was mom. I have heard of dogs called Hobo but not cats, still the name suited him very well because in a lot of ways he was more like a dog than a cat.

He was silly too, but lovable silly. In fact I could not help but love that cat and the silly things he did. Cats are supposed to hate water, well Hobo did too but every time that someone turned on a faucet he would come charging at it, stick his head under the running water, then immediately scramble off to a corner, shake himself silly and then if the faucet was still running charge back for more!

You could not keep him away from it, he would fight you to get at the water. More than once he ended up in a half filled bath and had to be helped out. We had to be very careful when running hot water.

Just like a dog, hobo would lie in wait for the mail to come through the mail slot. As it came through he'd leap and catch at least one in his claws. He'd roll as if he'd caught a mouse and tear at the mail with his back claws.

As he grew older he calmed down but still kept us amused with silly antics and silly expressions on his face. He had favorite shelf that he liked to stretch out on, lying on the edge with two legs hanging over. He watched us folks going back and from with an open mouth as if appalled at our silly ways!

When time came to say goodbye we did not try to replace him, there couldn't be another cat like that. Bless you Hobo.

Our Hobo
by: Sally

We had a lovely cat called Hobo - because he was! He just turned up and, eventually, moved in. Hardly any teeth, a broken tail and a tiny, stutter of a meow never held him back.
He loved the other cats - all girls, please note, and took to sleeping in their chairs - with them still there!
Years of life on the road and never knowing where the next meal was coming from drove Hobo to eat all that was in sight - he looked a lot like a small barrel with legs.
Fat, happy and content he passed sunny days dozing on cut grass in the wheelbarrow, whilst birds pearched on the edge to eat the seeds. They just knew he didn't have that killer instinct.
Completely one of a kind - dear little Hobo!

Hobo is a great name.

Hi Jemima,

Thank you very much for sending in your great story.

It sounds like Hobo was silly in the way that we love cats to be, that is an amusing kind of silliness :0)

I think Hobo is a great name for a cat by the way, was he a stray before your family cared for him?

There are not too many cats that would stick their head under running water but here is a video of a cat that does - Cat Loves Water. But that cat is doing it to get a drink.

Yes, we cannot replace pets when they leave us, they are all individuals. All we can do, at the right time, is find another pet to love.
