Adopted an Indoor Cat

by Billy
(United Kingdom)

Previously we had a cat in the family for 17 years who lived both indoors and out, passed of natural causes.

I had thought long and hard about getting a rescue cat, but as i live at a busy junction, i either wanted a kitten who could grow up indoors or an adult cat that had never been outdoors. That way i wouldn't have felt like i was being cruel.

Low and behold Cats Protection in my area had a 4 year old indoor cat called Gizmo who had never been out, and had come from a family with young children so was very timid and nervous of human approaches. Unfortunately the previous owner had financially struggled too, and she was underfed.

I was happy to adopt her without even seeing a picture, as all that mattered was giving a cat a good home and plenty of love. Fast forward to now, and wee Gizmo is happy as can be. All the food she desires, plenty of toys, a huge bed and lots of interaction. I know that indoors she will have no dangers from other predators or vehicles, and is absolutely pampered beyond belief. One of the best things ever to happen to me.

I do think it's unwise to suddenly keep a cat indoors if they are used to being outside, but for a cat who has never known any different i don't think it's ever an issue.

All that matters is the quality of life they have with you, indoors or out. I wouldn't have an outdoor cat unless i lived in a rural location ,but that's just my personal choice.

Indoor Cats=Good :)
by: Kat

When I was little we had several outdoor cats and it's heartbreaking because they only live a few years when allowed outside. Just last year, our last cat allowed outside was stolen by our neighbor who tried to keep him inside and he freaked because they wouldn't let him out. We found out (that was the third time, not the first, that they'd tried to take him and they knew he was ours...even taking his collar and ID tags off). We had to go to the police to prove he's our cat and get him back. We now have him strictly indoors here and he hasn't tried to get out once. I think if a cat is comfortable with their family and feel they belong with them then they are fine indoors.

If for no other reason, for their safety
(from cars, poisons, other animals, cruel people, and other harmful substances) it's best to keep them indoors, and I'd only try to switch them from outdoors to indoors if it's already your cat. Otherwise it could be a feral who'd be very unhappy indoors losing their freedom and friends outside and horrified of humans, or it could be someone else's pet and already belong to someone who'd miss them terribly, and is cared for. In either case, the cat loses when it's taken from outside. The biggest concern is that if it's allowed outside to make sure it's spayed/neutered so there aren't feral cats born outside that are homeless, afraid of humans, and have to fend for themselves.

I'm happy for you and the kitty you saved for giving him a wonderful home. And you must care very much to consider the cat's perspective and what the safest life for the kitty would be. Good luck with your kitty. :)

Lifestyle.
by: Larry (editor)

Hi Billy,

Good for you for considering the lifestyle a cat has been used to before adopting.

Yes I think you are right, a cat that has been used to the outside would have a harder time adjusting to life indoors only. Not saying it can't be done, but obviously more difficult than for a cat who has never been allowed outside.

Sounds like you got yourself a great cat with Gizmo and that she has a great quality of life with someone who cares for her and loves her.

Thank you very much indeed for sharing your story with us.
