What is the Best Dry Cat Food?

Choosing the best dry cat food for our beloved felines doesn't just seem complicated.  It is difficult.  Manufacturers don't help when they use terms like maize instead of calling it corn or they say meat by-products without identifying the kind of meat.  It doesn't help when they say their food is 95% meat but it is actually 95% meat trimmings which are mostly fat and thus not high protein.

Cats need a high protein cat food with some fat and very little carbohydrate. The protein needs to come from a meat source because cats are not able to use plant protein.  They will thrive on this kind of diet and you will find they eat less.  They don't have to eat huge quantities to get the nutrients they need.

A Word About Dry Cat Food

It would actually be better for your cat if you never fed it dry cat food.  Why? Because it is dry.

Cats are not thirst driven to drink water and therefore they drink very little.  Cats in the wild get most of their water from the food they eat -- mice, birds, rabbits, etc.  Your cat will be prone being dehydrated which makes them susceptible  to urinary tract problems if its entire diet is dry food.

Yes, I know it is convenient.  Yes, I know your cat may need to eat through the day while you are at work and you can't leave canned food out all day.  It is just that it would be better for your cat and your vet bill budget if you fed it only canned or fresh/frozen food.

What I suggest for those of you who are gone from home all day is that you leave a bowl of dry food for your kitty to eat during the day but do feed it canned food for its morning and evening meal.

You say your cat will only eat dry food because that is what it was fed as a kitten? OK.  There are ways to wean cats over to enjoying wet food and I will explain how on another page.

Reading a Cat Food Label

The first thing to understand is that ingredients are listed by weight in descending order.  So if the first ingredient is chicken then there is more chicken in the food in weight than the foods listed after it.

Generally you won't go too wrong if you give most of your attention to the first five ingredients and read the other ingredients to make sure there isn't any bad stuff in there like preservatives and food dye.  You want a food that is high in animal protein and low in carbohydrate.
