Cartoon Cats

We love them! Those funny cartoon cats of the movies.

The boring newsreel finishes, what's next? Great! It's a cartoon, even better it's a cartoon featuring one of the famous cartoon cats.

A visit to the movies in days of yesteryear often meant enjoying a double feature, and if you were really lucky, an animated cartoon.

These short films provided a few moments in the crazy world inhabited by zany characters who did horrific things to each other. Most usually these characters were animals with exaggerated human traits, ducks, mice, rabbits, dogs, birds, even a skunk, but for many people the most hilarious of these animated characters were the cartoon cats.

Nearly always the aggressor, rarely the victor, these fantasy felines survived explosions, electrocutions, sleepwalking off, or being pushed off of cliffs, having stylized ten ton weights dropped on them. Yes, those old 'toons were violent, but none of the 'victims' suffered permanent harm, and were always back for more of the same in their next adventure.

Felix - King of the Cartoon Cats.

In November of 1919 a simply drawn little fellow hit the cinema screen. He did not have the power of speech, for this was the era of silent movies, but he had a wonderfully expressive personality and was able to convey a full range of emotions to his audience. Perhaps the most famous of all the animated cats, Felix was the cat that kept on walking. This lovable little fellow held sway as the ' King of the cartoon characters', but then something happened to take away his crown... Find out what here > Felix the Cat. Cat 'n Mouse Chase.

There's nothing like a cat and mouse chase, for pandemonium, for mayhem, and most of all for laughs. The comic possibilities of a feline hunting a small, innocent looking rodent, have long been exploited by animators, and never better than in the Tom and Jerry series of cartoons. Tom was perhaps the ideal cartoon cat, mischievous, impulsive, a bit of a wicked streak, but cute and lovable. The mouse Jerry, was the perfect opponent for him, whimsical, cheeky and no where as innocent as he looked. Find out more about this lovable pair here > Tom and Jerry

Sufferin' Succotash It's Sylvester.
