Nov 4, Cat Laws Too Harsh?

According to a news report there are some new laws regarding domestic cats that have just been, or are about to be brought into force in Tasmania (Australia.)

It will be compulsorily for all owners of Tasmania's estimated 92,000 pet cats to have them microchiped and neutered if they are older than six months. That will certainly ease the stray and feral cat problem but should it be compulsorily?

No kittens or cats will be able to be advertised or legally sold until they are at least eight weeks old and have been neutered and microchipped to individually identify each cat and its owner. The fine for selling an un-neutered cat will be as high as $6000, owners of cats without identification microchips implanted will face a $2400 penalty. Wow, they are not messing about.

Here's what I absolutely do not agree with - New legislation proposes that any cat left unclaimed by its owners at a cat management facility such as a council pound, for more than five days can be euthanased without its owner's permission.

Also local councils will be able to declare any area of land such as a council park, as a prohibited cat zone where any cat can be legally trapped, seized and humanely destroyed.

Farmers will be able to destroy any cat caught on their property if it is found more than one kilometer from any nearby homes. I don't agree with that at all!

Nov 3, A social climber?

A cat that is permitted to roam outside has the chance to satisfy their climbing urges on fences and trees and the like. But what can an indoor only cat can do except to make use of your furniture, and in doing so leave a few scratch marks and maybe knock things down to the floor.

Cat climbing trees give indoor only cats a place to satisfy their climbing urges without upsetting their humans. Of course many cats that can go outdoors also appreciate cat climbers, even though they have many places they can climb outside. Why?

Well cats are cats.

Oct 30, What went wrong?

Back in 2004 the island of Guernsey (one of the Channel Islands,) had fantastic success with its spay and neuter program. So successful that not only did the number of stray cats on the island fall drastically but the local shelters were even able to take a consignment of homeless cats from the UK.

The news story made its way around the world and Guernsey's rescue shelters even had calls from the USA and from Russia asking if they could help.

Seeing that is a truly commendable success, I thought I'd search for any up to date news to see if the island is still enjoying a low number of homeless and feral cats.

Sadly, from the latest news that I could find (August 2008,) it seems the island once again has an over population of cats. Members of Animal Aid have been knocking on doors to offer owners who cannot afford to pay for the service, free neutering and spaying for each cat they own.

Guernsey has such a big cat population problem that we just have to get to the root of it. said Animal Aid founder Sue Vidamour. She said there is a huge surplus in its cattery.

What a terrible shame to go from the happy position of almost every cat on the island being a wanted and loved cat, to the unhappy position of having a surplus of cats. What went wrong I wonder?

Every year millions of unwanted cats are put to sleep. These are, in the main, perfectly good cats that would have made someone a marvelous pet or companion.

Deep down, you already know that you should get your cat fixed.

Oct 24, Your Cat's Coat and Your Cat's Health.

Your cat's coat can be a good indication of the state of your cat's health. The coat reflects the quality of a cat's diet, the level of exercise and overall condition, it should be free from dandruff and have a gleam to it.

A lifeless, dry or course appearance with raised fur is an indication that some cat wellness checks may be in order. The fur of a healthy cat will be smooth and pleasant to the touch, and without any bald or thin patches brought about by scratching or excessive grooming.

Eczema, fleas, allergies, stress and ringworm are some of the causes of scratching, your vet will give advice and possibly prescribe treatment.

Oct 20, Butter on your cat's paws?

You have heard the story. Put butter on you cat's paws when you move home and your cat will not get lost.

True, or old wives tale?

Old wives tale of course :0)

What's that, I can hear some of you shouting It's true, it's true. That is what my friend Elaine says. Elaine says that she always does that when she moves home and she has never lost a cat yet. Well that's good, but who is to say that she would have lost any of her cats if she had not put butter on their paws?

If you move with your cat try and confine her to one room for awhile so she can get used to her new home. If your cat is allowed outside, it would be best to wait a few weeks before letting her out to explore.

That way your cat is far less likely to wander off and get lost. Works better than smearing butter on her paws and you don't get buttery paw prints all over your new home. :0)

For variety you have a mad five minutes tearing around the place, or sit at the window chattering at the birds. Often too you do all within your power to remind me that a human should have at least one daily play session with his cat.

I confess to you my little friend, that sometimes I feel just a twinge of jealousy about your lifestyle. All that eating and sleeping with none of the cares of modern life that a mere human has to endure.

But really, mostly it is not jealousy that I feel, it is gratitude that you are here for me. My little companion that greets me when I come home. You give so much and ask for so little in return. Thank you Mr Robin.

You didn't hear a word of that did you. You are fast asleep as usual :0)

Oct 10, Is Talcum Powder A Danger For Your Cat?

Here is a danger to cats that I have been reading about. Along with all the other hazardous things around the house that should be kept securely away from cats such as, cleaning products, plants, anti-freeze etc. you can add talcum powder as being a danger to your feline.

Yes innocent (?) talcum powder apparently increases the chances of lung problems for cats if they inhale it.

Now I don't know how many cats would inhale talcum powder without sneezing and running from it, or how frequently a cat would have to inhale before any problems are caused. The one source I obtained this information from is pretty adamant that cats and talc don't mix, but I can't find a lot of information elsewhere.

I have read that industrial talc can contain traces of asbestos, but that should not be present in talcum for home use. So is talcum powder a hazard to your cat's health ? Perhaps it may be best to be on the safe side and keep it away from your pet.

Oct 6, A Cat Takes A Shower.

I love this crazy cat. You know how cats are about getting wet, how many cats would hold their head under a running faucet?

You can see why the cat is doing it, the water runs down her, or his, face and the cat can drink. My Mr Robin always runs to a running faucet, he would never put his head under the water though, oh no. He bats at the stream with his paw and gets a few drops of water that way.

Movement breaks the surface tension of water and draws in health giving oxygen. This is known as aeration and it makes water far more attractive for cats to drink than static water.

A cat water fountain is a great way to offer your cat cool oxygenated water without your cat having to take a shower :0)

Cats of today are very likely to live a lot longer life than cats of past generations. Even cats of as little as sixty years ago did not enjoy the life expectancy that domestic cats do now.

We are caring for our feline friends a whole lot better. Cats used to be thought of as animals that were handy to have around, useful for catching mice and other rodents but not considered to be worthy as pets. If they were fed at all they were usually given scraps, the little commercial cat food that was available was not very good quality.

Cats were rarely taken to the vets, and if they were, there were very few treatments available for them. Neutering a cat was unheard of. If a cat got sick, or was injured, that was too bad, it was left to fend for itself.

These are some of the reasons that your cat is likely to be your companion for quite some time. The more care that we give our cats, the more we make them part of our family, the longer they are likely to be with us.

Oct 2, Why?

All too frequently we read of sickening cases of cruelty to pets in local and national media. Sometimes these are cases of cruelty by neglect, someone not properly looking after an animal. Other cases are cruelty by ignorance, not knowing how to properly care for a pet.

Sadly though, many cases are sheer sadistic animal abuse. Why is it, we ask, that some 'human' creatures inflict suffering upon other creatures that are usually smaller and defenseless? Why do they take pets into their homes only to treat them with less than respect and with a great deal of contempt?

Sep 28, Felix the Cat Collectibles.

The first Felix the Cat cartoon was released in November of 1919, nearly ninety years ago. Although perhaps not quite the cartoon superstar that he once was, this funny feline's fame has passed down through the generations.

It is amazing the number of Felix memorabilia and collectible items that have been produced over the years and there is quite a selection available on eBay. At the time of writing there are a Felix Bobblehead (remember those?) A 1950 Felix the Cat book, a 1927 postcard and 1932 Felix play money.

You can take a look here Felix the Cat Collectibles.

Moving home can be a very stressful business. Sure you look forward to settling into your new abode but there is so much to be done, so much to organize, that the whole task of moving can give you a heap of anxiety.

Your cat too is likely to find moving home extremely unsettling. Given that most cats find any change stressful, when their whole world changes it can be quite traumatic.

But there are things that you can do to make the move less unpleasant for kitty, and that will make things easier for you too.
