Feb 6, Kittens and Panleukopenia

Kittens affected by cat distemper (Panleukopenia) unfortunately do not have a high survival rate. Strong adult cats that endure the first five days have a much better chance of surviving (provided veterinary attention is sought as soon as symptoms develop.)

Kittens do not have a high survival rate.

It is quite common for a cat with distemper to contract other infections because its immune system has been weakened.

A surviving cat will require plenty of nursing after it is well enough to be taken home, and full recovery will take some time, a recovering cat should be isolated from all other cats. When fully recovered a cat will likely have no lasting impairment and will then be immune to reinfection.

What if a pregnant cat has distemper?

A pregnant cat infected by the parvovirus can transmit the virus to her developing litter. The resulting kittens are likely to be born with cerebellar hypoplasia, a disorder of the brain, and therefore be uncoordinated in their movement and suffer from head tremors.

The kittens will in all probability survive, but the disorder is permanent. Feline distemper sometimes causes . . .

Jan 26, Why Is My Cat Spraying Urine Indoors?

Both cats that are kept indoors all of the time and cats that are allowed outdoors will spray inside the home. This behavior is a big problem for owners.

The cat will back up to the vertical object that he or she wants to mark

A cat will urine mark not only to communicate to other cats but to label its territory with its own smell to boost its self esteem and confidence.

Spraying urine in the home can be an indication that your pet is feeling distressed and needs to feel more secure by surrounding itself by its own fragrance.

Un-neutered and un-spayed cats are by far the most likely to spray. With the unaltered cat, urine marking will not only signal the cat's occupancy but also its status. Unaltered male cat spraying is triggered by hormonal changes when Tom reaches sexual maturity.

Female cats in heat have high levels of oestrogen in their urine. This is mixed with secretions from their anal glands and results in a very strongly smelling spray that is attractive to Tomcats.

A neutered or spayed cat will also sometimes spray urine indoors, although this is less likely than with an unaltered cat. The most likely . . .

Jan 16, First Aid For a Cat Bite.

Your priority to treat a cat bite is to clean and flush the wound immediately.

A little bleeding can actually be a good thing as it helps by sluicing out the wound, but the flow will need to be controlled so you can clean the bite up. Gentle pressure applied to a gauze pad, or terry cloth pad, pressed over the wound will help to control the bleeding.

Those thin sharp teeth go deep into the flesh. Never underestimate a cat bite.

Whilst using an antibacterial soap would be best, any soap will do, liquid soap will get deeper into the wound.

Use the soap and warm running water to deep clean the bite for a minimum of five minutes, be sure to completely rinse all the soap out of the wound.

If you have Betadine solution use it to sterilize the wound or as an alternative use a saline solution of 0.9% salt. When the wound has been cleaned, cover it with a clean, dry dressing. If you have it apply a little antibiotic ointment before the dressing.

Next, it is important to get medical treatment. Yes, even though you have applied first aid to the wound it is imperative that you . . .

These cats love being around their human family and want to be involved, they bond extremely well although some can be a little stand offish with strangers.

They are not a breed that are known for being lap cats, they do love attention and affection but most prefer being near you rather than on you.

Their ability to take things in their stride and tolerate a lot of activity makes Pixie Bob cats suited for families with children. They usually get along very well with other household pets too. Not a highly vocal breed, but Pixies do like to . . .
