I don't usually publish links to news stories about rescue centers that are overfull with cats, because sadly, rescue centers are continually overfull and there are many such news stories. This story is a little different I think. There cannot be many shelters that get the problem of a hundred new cats and kittens at once! A Richmond, B.C., animal shelter has exactly that problem after an elderly man donated an estimated 100 kittens and cats to their care. The cats were staying in a barn owned by the 85 to 90-year-old when it became clear that many of the kittens were getting sick and he realized it was time to give them up. A black cat with white paws is nursing two puppies so young their eyes aren't even open yet and a three week old kitten that is not hers. The mom cat, which doesn't have a name, was brought in to Rock Island County Animal Care and Control with her own litter of kittens. Sadly some of the kittens died and the remaining ones were weaned when the young kitten arrived. Shelter staff put the black kitten in with the mom and she took to it right away. But when the puppies were found in Moline late last week, there weren't any nursing dogs to serve as a foster mom to the delicate pups. The cat takes her mothering duties very seriously, letting anyone who puts their hand in her crate know that these are her babies . . . and they are not to be touched. Amid letters, bills, and packages sat a small, frightened 2-pound kitten, abandoned inside a street corner mailbox in Hyde Park. On Saturday, a letter carrier discovered the kitten, who was malnourished and shaking but otherwise healthy, in the mailbox at the intersection of Arlington and Davison streets, Boston. The 8 week old kitten was named Postina by the MSPCAs assistant manager after she arrived at the organizations Jamaica Plain headquarters on Saturday afternoon. A good Samaritan showed up on Oak Street in Oakwood this morning and used a harness system to scale some 50 feet up a backyard tree that a kitten climbed up five days ago and returned the pet to safety. Colleen and Robert Nesseths dog Lakota, an Australian Shepherd, took charge of an orphaned litter of kittens two weeks ago. Unfortunately a car hit and killed the mother cat in early May. When the family found her two white and two black kittens in their barn and brought them inside, mewing in a box, something unexpected happened. Lakota trotted over and began grooming the kittens.
