Leila the escape artist

My kitten is 5 months old. She is crazy about the outdoors. Since I brought her home at two months..she has escaped numerous times. how do i let her out and know she knows how to come back. i live in a wooded area...and she escaped into the forest..and i chased her......i ran into thorns and got scratched everywhere....i was crying with fear ...i thought i had lost her.....
how will i know that if she goes out she will come back.

How do you train a kitten? i'm terrified. i have a one year old that sits in the awning and has no urge to go out. Why is this little one so crazy about taking off and disappearing. im completely scratched from head to toe,,,but brought my kitten home.

my cat

Its all fine to say that your cat will always come back if you love him. I loved my cat I adored him but he didn't come back to me.

I sort of hope that someone has him and wo let him out because then it makes sense why he didn't come home. I loved him.

Very sweet kitten.

Hi Anna,

Thank you very much for sharing your photo of Leila with us, she is a little sweetheart.

Teresa has given you some very good advice. Yes, cats do like to try and get outside, they are animals after all.

If you do decide to allow Leila to go outside it is very important that she has her shots, as Teresa says, and also that you get her spayed. If she is not spayed, and she goes out, it will not be long before she presents you with a litter.

Cats that are allowed out mostly do come back. Of course, sometimes they do wander too far, or someone takes them in and starts feeding them, or something else happens. But there are lots of cats who are indoor/outdoor cats their whole lives and they come back to their humans.

There is some advice on this page Outdoor Cats about getting your cat to come to you when you call.

Whether you decide to keep her as an indoor cat or allow her out . . . good luck, you have a very sweet kitten there.

Cats usually need to go outside
by: Anonymous

As my local vet told me (she lives in the woods like I do), there are some cats who just have to go outside and others who are oontent staying inside. The important thing for the cats who really must go outside is that they get the vaccination for, oh hell, whatever it is that outdoor cats need to be vaccinated against.

Personally, here is what has worked for my cat and for us: We put a cat door in so if we go camping, our cat can go in and out as he pleases. We didn't let him out until he was about 6 months old and was really going crazy. He does bring in a mouse or lizard sometimes, to show us he's a good hunter, but he doesn't eat them. He's always only eaten his crunchies and licks the spoonful of canned food we give him each day, just so he feels equal to our two dogs who live for their daily meals.

Our vet told me that she had a cat that she wanted to give a treat to at Thanksgiving so gave it canned food and he turned up his nose.
So, it seems that really what you give the kitty from the beginning is what they will want and love, besides the mice and lizards they catch. Hah.
Just try and be loving with your cat and he will always want to come back to you.
