I accidently killed a black cat with my car

by MARIA
(TOA BAJA, PR)

I was angry because I had had a discussion and therefore speeding in my car. I suddenly saw a black thing that crossed in front of my car. It was a big black cat and I felt how the tire bumped in it.

As I looked at it through my view mirror, I saw it jumping. I went back but it was badly wounded and bleeding as it finally died. I was devastated because I felt hopeless and started crying, felt really bad.

Anger is an enemy. I felt that my luck was going bad, because of all the superstitions. I guess it just how you look at it.

WHY DID IT CAME RUNNING TOWARDS MY CAR??? DOES IT MEAN SOMETHING. IT WASN'T MY INTENTION, IT WAS OUT OF MY CONTROL.

Sad but unavoidable
by: Anonymous

I do understand your feelings about hitting that poor cat. So many animals are not vehicle savvy and it is sad but often unavoidable that we sometimes hit them while driving. I live in the country and teach at night and try my best to look out for animals when driving home. Several times I have slowed down for rabbits or foxes who run ahead of my car, frightened out of their wits. But once, coming around a curve, out of nowhere, a sweet little bunny ran right in front of me and I heard the sickening Thump-bump. I hated that and felt sick for a long time afterwards. But the truth is, we drive fast cars in animal territory and they sometimes don't get out of the way in time. So, what to do? Stop driving and just walk everywhere? (It would take me hours to get to the college where I teach that takes me over an hour to get to driving.) I guess we just have to be as alert and aware as possible and hope for the best and be thankful that we don't run over more of them.

Please do not feel too bad.
by: Larry (Editor)

Hi Maria,

Sadly it's a fact of life that cats run into the road and many end their lives that way.

Alright, you say that you were speeding and perhaps that did not help, but you had no control over the poor cat. you could not help that it ran into the road. It was good of you to stop to see if you could help.

Please do not feel too bad. It is upsetting but you did not mean for it to happen.

My son had a cat run in front of his van, there was nothing he could do to miss it. He too was very upset. The family who's cat it was were very understanding.

The fact that the cat was black does not mean anything, it could have been any color.

Thank you for being brave enough to share your story with us.
