Indoor Cat and Happy.

by Janice Lockheart

I am a fanatical believer in keeping cats indoors. Yes, there is another point of view and I'm sure that those that let their cat out love their cats as much as I love Mitch. But let him outside is something I could never do, I would be much too nervous.

There is not too much traffic here, not like in the cities but all it takes is one car. Then there are people who do not like cats, it is up to them whether they like cats or not, each to their own, but why they do cats harm I just cannot understand. There's the wild animals too, and vicious domestic ones. These are some of the reasons I keep Mitch inside.

Cruel? Some of your readers think it cruel to keep a cat in the house. Well I'm sorry, but it is not cruel. Mitch is happy, I know that he is. He does not have freedom that is true, but even we as human beings have our freedom restricted in some ways.

I just could not be without him, Is that selfish?

EVERY CAT IS DIFFERENT
by: Anonymous

Every cat and every situation are different. I have 2 oudoor and 1 indoor. The oldest is an outdoor tom (neutered) eleven years old. His life as an outdoor has been great, but so is the life of my indoor for other reasons. You´re not selfish, or perhaps you are, we all are to a degree, so what? If your cat is happy, that´s all that matters, and I do believe you when you say he is.

Selfish?
by: Anonymous

I think that it is selfish to keep cats indoors only. Imagine if you only stayed indoors and never went outside ever, do you think you would be at your optimal health?

I understand your worry, however you could train your cat to go outdoors in a harness with a leash. My cat waits to be harnessed and even though people might look at me weird if we are at the park, I feel good about letting my cat outside safely. Most of the time however I would just harness her while I was in the backyard. She now goes outside without her leash and has never left our small yard. She learned her boundaries. I must caution you however if you do harness your cat you cannot leave her outside unattended, you must be there incase the leash gets caught on something, etc.

The thing is cats are smart, and if I were a cat I would rather live a shorter life free, doing what nature intended, then a longer life caged indoors.

Cannot understand people who harm cats.
by: Larry (Editor)

Hi Janice,

It is not cruel to keep your cat inside, if Mitch is happy that is all that matters.

I too cannot understand people who harm cats, they may not like cats, that is up to them, but to cause any animal harm is inexcusable.

And no, you are not being selfish, you love your cat. Cats have that effect on us.

Thank you very much indeed for your submission.
