Nobby

I always have liked cats and most pet animals but I never really thought of getting a cat for myself.

About 5 years ago there was a young couple in the flat upstairs to mine. They had a ginger cat, a Tom named Nobby, and as far as I knew they thought the world of him. But they could not have cared too much because when they left they abandoned him.

What they told me, on the day that they moved out, was that someone would call round later to pick Nobby up. Nobody came for the cat that day and the next day when I got back home from work Nobby was still around. They had left a sash window open a crack for the cat to climb in and out, he could get to the ground off of the flat roof of my kitchen.

I left some scraps and water out for Nobby and contacted the landlord to find out the new address of Nobbys owners. He said he could not give that to me. Well, I thought, it looks like I am now Nobbys owner.

So you see I did not exactly choose Nobby or even choose to have a cat but I certainly would choose him, I would really miss him if he wasn't around and could never abandon him I don't know how his last owners could have done that.

I don't know how old Nobby is but he is still very fit and active. He has been neutered and is in good health. He comes in and goes out as he pleases. I did get him a litter tray but he never used it as he goes outside, so I got rid of it. He has never made a mistake indoors. Yes I would have chosen Nobby, I think the world of him.

Don't know how folks can just abandon their pet
by: Larry (Editor)

Hi Eric,

I don't know how folks can just abandon their pet like that. It makes you wonder if they ever loved the animal in the first place.

It is true that it can be difficult to rent accommodation if you have a pet but you can at least try and find someone suitable to take your pet if you really have to, or not move at all. As a last resort find a rescue center. The thing you don't do is leave your cat to fend for itself.

Thank goodness that you were there and kind enough to take Nobby in.

Thank you very much for sharing your story with us.
