Our sun loving outdoor cat.

by Sue D.

Our cat "Barnes" was not allowed out of the house until he was around two years old. In fact we did not intend to let the little terror out he managed to bolt out the back door one day. I was in a panic, he had run to the end of the back yard and was investigating all the new sights and smells. I thought that if was to make grab for him he would run and that would be the last we would ever see of our pet.

So there I stood watching for about five minuets. Suddenly it was if he became aware that I was there, he ran back down the yard towards me, stopped, and carried on his investigation. Eventually I opened the back door and stood just inside, and presto, Barnes slinked back inside.

I was relieved that our cat had not disappeared forever, but over the next week Barnes acted more restless than he had since he was a kitten. He spent a lot of time at the window too. So after a long talk about it with the family we decided to let him out when he wants to go.

There has not been one problem with it. Yes Barnes has been neutered so that may make a difference. He has been out of the yard a few times but mostly stays in it. He is never out long so we have not put in a pet door, he just scratches to let us know he wants in.

He does not want to go out there if the weather is the least bit cold, but when the sun is out so is he, he loves the heat alright.

Enjoying the outdoors.

Hi Sue,

Thank you very much for sharing your story about Barnes with us.

You are right neutered males are less inclined to wander far and get lost. And who can blame your cat for enjoying the sun ;0) Please do remember that too much sun can be harmful for cats just like it can for humans. Great to read that your cat can enjoy the outdoors.
