Outdoors and loving it!

Sampson is now just over five years old and has been able to go in and out since about 7 months old.

I believe that he is a much happier, more lively cat as a direct result of his interactions with other outdoor cats, the elements, etc. He's inside up to 75% of the time anyway! Sure there's risks involved and I moved to a garden apt. in a detached house just over two years ago so that he'd have a minimum of traffic, less exposure to undesirable people, etc.

It's true not everyone can attain a setup like this and for them, perhaps inside only is the right choice. I also think the cat's personality should also be taken into account, if possible.

Sampson is an exceptional cat, he's always loved racing about, climbing, and jumping and will actually follow me and my vacuum cleaner about as I go from room to room despite its noise! I have never known either a dog or a cat which would do this and I'd like to know if any of you readers have such a pet!!

I'd like to mention that I know a lady who has had cats her entire life. She has always let them out at least once a day (unless they are unwell) and they have all lived long lives...fifteen plus years...

Cats and vacuum cleaners
by: G. Whalley

Hi Larry and Anonymous...

My how I'm enjoying this website!!

It was really great receiving your feedbacks and it's absolutely true about Sampson and the vacuum cleaner! Perhaps it's because when he was very, very young, he was brought to an apartment directly across from mine as soon as he was able to leave his mother - an apartment where he was subject to a fan running almost 24/7 in just a two room suite. I guess he became used to the noise of a machine in his immediate surroundings -or maybe he just wants to make sure I do a good job!!

Cheers,
Gordy W

Runs from the cleaner.
by: Anonymous

Well sir, my cat does not like the cleaner at all! As soon as she hears me get it out - - the tubes clank - - she is off to one of her hiding places, usually under the bed unless it is that room I am cleaning.

Also she runs off if there are horses hoofs clomping on the TV set, go figure.

Magnificent cat
by: Larry (Editor)

Hi Gordon,

Samson is a fine looking cat. Nice to know that he enjoys his time out of the house, I can see that he enjoys time outside with his buddies too :0)

You are quite right that not everyone lives somewhere that they can let their cats out. Lots of things to take into consideration.

Samson really is exceptional if he follows your vacuum cleaner! I bet there are not many cats that do that. I too will be interested to see if their are any other visitors who's cats don't run from the vac.

Magnificent photographs, magnificent cat with a great story, thanks for sharing with us.
