Play dead!

by Jackie Williamson
(Lansing, Mi)

This is Little Miss Kitty. She is almost 2 and her favorite thing to do is lay on her back and play dead. She will wait until one of us comes up and rubs her belly with our foot and try to "revive" her. When she is fed up with the rubbing she will nip your ankle and then take off running.

Pickles is a show off.
by: Anonymous

Our cat does the same trick! Pickles plays dead anywhere, on the counter, on the table, on the bed.

We are all used to it and take no notice of him (show off!) But if we don't warn visitors in advance they get a shock, which the darn cat enjoys.

Forgetful Cat =]

by Adam
(Connecticut)

I've had many cats in my short 15 years of life, but the one I have right now is my favorite. He's so cuddly and handsome.

The funny thing is, though, that he is very old (16 years I think now?). Occasionally, he forgets where he is or even how he got there. He just blanks out. It's amusing to watch even though it probably means he is losing his mind slowly.

Although he blanks out many times a day, he is also very smart.

He knows that it's time to eat where he hears a can open. He knows that I'm home when my mom says my name.

It's amazing how such animals can be so stupid at times (no offense to him) and, yet, be so amazingly smart.

Getting Old.
by: Anonymous

Hey it's not being stupid it's just being old. Come on, even people become a little forgetful in advancing years.

Cats get slower as they get old too. They may also not want to be picked up so much or be made a fuss of. It's just one of those things but they still need our love.

He is forgetting.
by: Anonymous

I was very interested to read your story. My cat too is acting very strange.

I do not for sure know how old he is, he has been with me for five years but was grown when I got him, I think he is now quite old.

When I put down his food he has always eaten half and then wandered away. He would go back after about an hour and eat the rest, no problem. But about the last six months he eats half and goes off, but then he is crying like I have forgotten to put his food out. I have to pick him up and put him down in front of his food which he then eats.

If I didn't do that he would be crying for his food all night. It's very worrying.

Cats can be particularly smart.
by: Larry (Editor)

Hi Adam,

Yes animals certainly can be smart and it seems to me that cats can be particularly smart.

16 is not all that old for a cat, sure he has passed the first flush of youth but many cats go on to live a lot longer.

And if he forgets where he is sometimes, well even I do that, but then I am old :0)

Sounds like you have a great cat, thank you for sharing your story.

All my cats have been silly.

by Gale

I think that every cat that I’ve ever had has been silly in some way or another, mighty glad of that. Who would want their cat to be sensible all the time? That would be boring, sure thing.

Looking up the word silly, it can mean weak minded, foolish, absurd, I’m sure that we don’t mean silly in that way when we talk about cats. Don’t we mean funny, whacky, amusing, crazy, that’s what I mean when I say cats are silly. Every cat of mine has been kept inside the house; I think that has some bearing on the matter.

Some people may say that a cat should be free to go outside and I can understand that, but I keep my cats safe from accidents and that’s the way it will always be.

You see, a cat that has the backyard and more to roam has more opportunity to let off energy, and so may not be so active and silly when he is at home. Maybe the cat is not at home much at all.

A cat confined to the house has to burn off his energy right in front of you, and often that is downright amusing. The two boys I have now chase each other all over, first Butters is chasing Eric, then the other way around. The way they act you would think they hated each other and were at war. The next thing tho is they are both curled next each other on my bed, best of pals.

To be sure, I am every bit as silly as my cats are. I play with them a lot. Some times I am down on my hands and knees chasing them, they love it. If ever anybody looked thru the window :)

Cats give us pleasure in lots of ways don’t they. Its good to have a soft warm purring cat to hold and pet and cats are sure good to talk to and tell your troubles to. But for me it is when my cats are being silly they give me the greatest pleasure.

Silly and Fun
by: Larry (editor)

Hi Gale,

I do so very much agree with you.

Yes! When cats are being silly they are fun. I too mean cats are, or certainly can be, whacky. I don't mean they are feeble minded, they are intelligent animals.

It's that kitten like playfulness' from cats of any age, that makes them so amusing and I think we all love that.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts with us Gale.
