Tragedy of an outdoor cat

I had two cats who were unfortunately declawed that lived outdoors. They were very happy basking in the sun chased mice and whatnot.
Then my mom's father died and we became very busy during this time. Our older cat a black tuxedo cat who's name was Rupert disappeared we thought nothing of it we assumed he had run of to die in peace.
But then next summer our other cat Angel disappeared in the night we searched for her for three days but found nothing. Later we discovered they were eaten by great horned owls I often wonder if they could have saved themselves if they had claws.
That is the reason I am very much against declawing and prefer an indoor cat.
